Psycroptic: Psycroptic

The Tasmanian Devils sixth recording slips into a familiar atmospheric style intro. Peaceful sounding guitars included, the calm before the assumed auditory annihilation is soaked in anticipation.

Unprepared, 'Echoes To Come' floods in with precise layering of vocal switches, 6-string timings and complex back beats. Continuing to engulf the room with astronomical strength and intelligence, the track is checked to see if the complex composition has slipped into track 2. A negative finding confirms the the saturating musical genius on display is only 4:36 in.

Feeling like the Rapture has already descended, the march of 'Ending' guitar parts alone keep you locked in and hoping it's not you that's "Waiting to die." Still in awe of the previous tracks, the sticks count in to unleash 'A Soul Once Lost', driving guitarist Joe Haley to take the lighter, more melodic lead once more, while drummer and brother Dave Haley kicks in double time to push the sound through to a darker side.

The most intricate piece of the puzzle, 'Cold' is steeped in dramatic polar opposites, satisfying the need for the gentle sounds of a fine Spanish essence to the sounds of damnation through distortion and the solid bass of Cameron Grant. The hardcore inspired sounds of death within 'Setting The Skies Ablaze' and 'Ideals That Won't Surrender' leave a black mark etched in respect, fuelling the curiosity further.

'Sentence of Immortality' is a twitching of the senses that pays homage to a more simplistic approach, with a few harmonics thrown in for good measure. The clarity of Jason Pepiatt's lyrics through the record and his unwavering range doesn't stop here, this track communicating the desperation of smashing your head repeatedly against a brick wall all too clearly. Taking a political stand point, the frustration continues with 'The World Discarded,' an absolute banger, that leaves no space for a breath. 'Endless Wandering' finishes with the uncompromising split influences from the razor's edge of sludge/metal.

More daring than any other Psycroptic offering, this self-titled, 9 track recording relies on the maturity of the band to deliver a genre splicing masterpiece.
